What Are English Number Words?
English number words are the written forms of numbers.
Instead of using 1, 2, 3, English sometimes uses words.
one two three
Number words are important in reading and writing.
They appear in books, stories, dates, prices, and conversations.
Numbers 1–20
The first twenty numbers must be memorized because many of them do not follow a simple pattern and they form the base for larger numbers later.
one two three four five six seven eight nine ten
eleven twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen twenty
Some words look similar.
thirteen thirty
The spelling is close, but the meaning is different.
Tens
After twenty, English uses a clear pattern for tens, which helps learners build larger numbers more easily once the basic forms are understood.
twenty thirty forty fifty sixty seventy eighty ninety
Notice the spelling of forty.
It does not have a “u.”
Numbers 21–99
To write numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine, English combines the tens word and the ones word with a hyphen.
twenty-one twenty-two thirty-five forty-eight sixty-nine ninety-nine
This pattern is consistent.
It makes writing easier.
Hundreds
The word hundred is used after a number.
one hundred two hundred three hundred
When writing larger numbers, English often includes “and” in British English, while American English sometimes leaves it out in spoken form, which creates small differences in style but not in meaning.
one hundred and five two hundred and twenty
In American English:
one hundred five
Both are correct.
Thousands and Larger Numbers
After hundreds, English continues with thousand, million, and billion, which allow speakers to describe very large amounts clearly and accurately.
one thousand five thousand ten thousand
one million two million three billion
Example in a long sentence:
The city has more than one million people, and the population continues to grow every year as new families move there for work and education opportunities.
Ordinal Numbers
Ordinal numbers show position or order.
first second third fourth fifth
sixth seventh eighth ninth tenth
After ten, most ordinal numbers add -th, but there are a few irregular forms that must be memorized carefully.
first second third
twenty-first thirty-second forty-third
Ordinal numbers are used in dates.
January first May twenty-third
They are also used in competitions.
She finished in first place.
Writing Numbers in Sentences
In formal writing, small numbers from one to ten are often written as words, while larger numbers are written as digits, although style guides may vary depending on context and purpose.
There are three books on the table. There are 25 students in the class.
Consistency is important.
Long Practice Sentence
When learners understand how to write number words correctly from one to ninety-nine, combine them with hundreds and thousands, and recognize the difference between cardinal numbers that show quantity and ordinal numbers that show order, they can read dates, prices, statistics, and academic texts with greater accuracy and confidence.
